Curator: Monique Brunet-Weinmann

Artist: James Guitet

March 4, 1988 - April 2, 1988

Opening: March 3, 1988, 8:00 pm

A major exhibition dedicated to French artist James Guitet is presented at the Galerie de l’UQAM in 1988.

This exhibition, entitled James Guitet 1977-1987 was organized by guest curator, Madame Monique Brunet-Weinmann and was made possible thanks to the financial support of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Association Française d’Action Artistique (AFAA), the UQAM Foundation, the vice-rectorate for communications at UQAM and the Consulat général de France cultural service.

James Guitet is known by the Montreal public in particular through exhibitions held at Galerie Gilles Corbeil in the 1960s. However, since 1978 and following the closing of the Gallery and the death of its owner in 1985, his work has not been presented in Montreal.

Following the initiative of Madame Brunet-Weinmann, in collaboration with the Galerie de UQAM, the exhibition James Guitet 1977-1987 introduces a selection of works produced during the last ten years of absence.

The exhibition is divided into two parts, including the one presented at UQAM under the title Propositions, mainly comprising paintings and cut-out books. The other part, titled X Positions, features works on paper that are on display at the John A. Schweitzer Gallery from March 3 to April 3, 1988.
