Artist Isabelle Hayeur is focused on areas where disorder seems to reign, where manmade development and nature’s push-back appear to be in flux. Tabula Rasa exemplifies the artist’s preoccupation with this theme. In this work, a partially artificial composite of an urban landscape – an aerial view of UQAM’s Judith Jasmin and Hubert Aquin buildings seen under construction – is juxtaposed to an aerial view of a WWII battlefield. The result is an ostensibly realistic window onto the history of Montréal’s Quartier Latin area, in which the university is located.
