Expansion

Opening on February 26, the exhibition Expansion, curated by Louise Déry and Audrey Genois, will celebrate the 40th anniversary of UQAM, with 70 new works by graduates and teachers from the ÉAVM, the École des arts visuels et médiatiques de l’UQAM.

The vernissage will be attended by the Rector of UQAM, Claude Corbo, the curators and all the artists.

The exhibition will showcase the extraordinary artistic productivity at UQAM, with projects by: David Altmejd, Sophie Bélair-Clément, Patrick Bérubé, Jean-Pierre Gauthier, Cynthia Girard, Romeo Gongora, Pascal Grandmaison, Isabelle Hayeur, François Lacasse, Manuela Lalic, Stéphane La Rue, Mathieu Latulippe, Raymond Lavoie, Emmanuelle Léonard, Yann Pocreau, Robert Saucier, Francine Savard and Claire Savoie. There will also be a video compilation of works by: Jean-Pierre Aubé, Céline B. La Terreur, Olivia Boudreau, Michel Boulanger, Michel de Broin, Jacynthe Carrier, Mario Côté, Julie Favreau, Stéphane Gilot, Frédéric Lavoie, Nelly-Ève Rajotte and Myriam Yates; the inauguration of a photographic intervention by Gwenaël Bélanger in the Galerie de l’UQAM windows on Berri Street; a section of works by more than thirty UQAM professors and lecturers, including Alexandre Castonguay, André Clément, Thomas Corriveau, Patrick Coutu, Lucio de Heusch, Manon De Pauw, Jean Dubois, Denis Farley, Michel Goulet, Nathalie Grimard, Jocelyn Jean, Nicole Jolicœur, Marcio Lana-Lopez, Paul Landon, Lisette Lemieux, Yves Louis-Seize, Michel Martineau, Claude Mongrain, Alain Paiement, Josée Pellerin, Laurent Pilon, Anne Ramsden, Éric Raymond, Sylvie Readman, Monique Régimbald-Zeiber, Jocelyn Robert, Lucie Robert, Michael A. Robinson, Denis Rousseau, Dominique Sarrazin, David Tomas, Gisèle Trudel and Angèle Verret; and an evening of performances during the February 27 All-Nighter, with artists Belinda Campbell, Sophie Castonguay, Raphaëlle de Groot, The Two Gullivers (Besnik & Flutura Haxhillari) and Thierry Marceau. Exhibition

The Expansion project is a major initiative celebrating UQAM’s 40-year contribution to the arts and university life in Quebec. With this inclusive project based on the idea of the expansion of matter, of art in our lives, of the university in the city, and of UQAM in Quebec society over four decades, the Galerie de l’UQAM intends to showcase the visual and media arts, art history and museology at UQAM. Expansion includes works by a number of artists who graduated from UQAM, as well as professors and lecturers who have contributed and continue to contribute to the artistic life of the institution.

The exhibition is not based on a particular aesthetic, style or theme, but is rather the expression of the great diversity of current artistic practices. It is shaped by a unifying formal viewpoint, with the table, the box, the window and the stage serving as the surfaces on which a work is created. Whether painting, photography, sculpture, video or performance, and whether created by emerging or recognized artists, the works assembled here display various nuances of the essential vision that artists bring to bear on society and the world.

All-Nighter

The Galerie de l’UQAM is presenting an evening of exceptional performances in the Agora of the Judith-Jasmin Building (1400 Berri). The event will feature artists Belinda Campbell, Sophie Castonguay, Raphaëlle de Groot, The Two Gullivers (Flutura & Besnik Haxhillari) and Thierry Marceau. The exhibition galleries will be open to the public free of charge from 8 pm to 3 am and there will be performances from 10 pm until 1 am. This MONTREAL HIGH LIGHTS Festival event is not to be missed.

Dedicated gifts

At the official opening of the exhibition, Galerie de l’UQAM Director Louise Déry will launch a fund dedicated to the Galerie de l’UQAM and managed by the UQAM Foundation. The celebration of the University’s 40 years and the extraordinary meeting of a large number of UQAM art graduates and teachers for the Expansion event is a unique opportunity. It will draw the attention of donors to the recognized performance of the Galerie, as well as its development plan for the next few years in terms of acquiring works by up-and-coming artists.
