The Romantic Landscape Now

Artists: David Bierk, Tom Hopkins, Douglas Kirton, Landon Mackenzie, Jim Reid, Howard Simkins, Jeffrey Spalding, Peter Stephens, Richard Storms

Organization: Artspace Artist Center

July 17, 1987 - August 9, 1987

Opening: July 16, 1987, 8:00 pm

The nine artists in this exhibition refer explicitly or implicitly to a romantic vision of the landscape, dating back from 19th century Europe and North America. The romantic style and composition strategies have led contemporary images to the same theatricality and the same exalted temperament as 19th century romantics. The revival of this style gives the artists a fictitious impression of camaraderie with the Romantics. In the works presented for this exhibition, it is possible to find some suspicions of this irony or parody, but always through the emotional and the sublime … As visitors, we are sometimes attacked, sometimes seduced by the works of these artists.
