Luis Neves. Jeu, ironie et subversion

Master's student in art studies, UQAM

Artist: Luis Neves

October 30, 1987 - November 8, 1987

Opening: October 29, 1987, 8:00 pm

Bearing the title Jeu, ironie et subversion, the exhibition showcases a style of painting that is a synthesis of pictorial forms found throughout art history and elements used by the mass media. The artist uses quotation as a form of critical differentiation, in order to produce polyvalent meanings.

Two themes are developed through the works: first, the great historical upheavals linked particularly to the Iberian Peninsula, and finally exile, a fatal consequence arising from these situations. Luis Neves introduces painting as a critical act, whose object is historical reality in which lyricism and critical consciousness merge, thus opposing the return of old threatening myths.
