The exhibition of the Fourth Biennial of Contemporary Tapestry in Montreal will be presented from August 6 to September 7, 1986 at the Galerie de l’UQAM, thanks to the generous collaboration of its director, Mr. Luc Monette.

It will then be part of the Exhibition Centers of Rouyn-Noranda and Val d’Or’s programs, as well as that of the Amos Cultural Center.

At the beginning of 1987, it will be presented at the Mont-Laurier Exhibition Center; in April, it will move on to the Vieux Palais in Saint-Jérôme; finally, in May and June, the exhibition will end its tour of Quebec at the Musée de Vaudreuil.

The Fourth Biennial of Contemporary Tapestry in Montreal exhibition will then be presented in several museums in the eastern United States, before returning to Canada, where it will stop for a few months in Toronto, before embarking on its international tour.

The exhibition

The theme of the Fourth Biennial of Contemporary Tapestry in Montreal is “86”, refering to the maximum and minimum dimensions of the works presented.

The winning works this year show different facets of current research and practice within the medium: wall tapestries, space tapestries, tapestry-installation. To this diversity is added the richness of the traditional or newer materials used: plastic fibers, cotton, raw silk and wool are displayed in multiple forms. The body of work presented questions all aspects of the tapestry, from the craft, to the creation and the expression. The tapestry presented in the Biennial has nothing to envy to other mediums, on the contrary, it contributes to the dynamic evolution of other modes of expression.
