Nancy Spero’s work is the outcome of pursuing and surpassing political and feminist themes to derive her own personal creative language. Since deciding she would only depict women starting in 1974, her practice became radicalized. Untitled shows various female figures coming together in a freeform interplay, in spite of their obviously belonging to different times and spaces. The drawing becomes a story, a metaphor for language, a chorus of bodies and the spaces between them at play in this historically inflected work, which is inspired by ancient Sumerian writing. This work is a testament to both the politics and poetics of Spero’s research, displayed here by the artist in full mastery of the form.
