Portraits intimes is a photographic project developed by Gisèle Hébert and Jacques Lavoie, graduates of UQAM’s communications department. Interrogating the role and meaning of objects found in private interiors, and the relationships that individuals have with their immediate environment, the photographers have conducted a survey of some thirty residents of Montreal and its surroundings which provided the material for a series of typical images: the respondent’s portrait, their living room or dining room, their bedroom or a familiar object. The results demonstrate the lack of conformity as well as the originality and creativity of the interiors and testify to the different lifestyles found in individuals belonging to the various classes of Quebec society.
