Renard [Fox] is part of a series entitled Chasse [Hunting], in which the artist photographs characters dressed in furry mascot or stuffed animal costumes, set in nature. Many of the entities in the Chasse series are seen committing illicit acts with violent or sexual connotations. The disturbing feeling evoked by the images arises from the comical nature of the costumes contrasting with the serious or dramatic nature of the scenes enacted. The critical representation of human behaviour with a sardonic edge, as seen here, is a quality evident in much of Laplante’s work.
