This three-part document presents an exhibition, a conference and a number of projects which were all prompted by the 50th anniversary of the publication of the Refus global manifesto and which return to the question of social activism in the arts community. Essays by Déry and Régimbald-Zeiber introduce the theme of concern, explain the criteria for selecting work for the exhibition, and comment on the work of the six artists included in it. These texts are followed by the presentations of the six participants in the conference, which address a variety of topics ranging from Borduas’ social conscience to the paradox of professional commitment. Finally, the volume presents the work of the six Quebec artists who agreed to conceive of the book as an exhibition venue.
