This catalogue accompanies the exhibition Artur Żmijewski. Scenarios of Dissidence, presented at the Galerie de l’UQAM and curated by Véronique Leblanc and Louise Déry. The exhibition and the book present works in which the artist observes the emergence and escalation of conflicts arising from encounters with radical otherness. These works address the failure of dialogue, the impossibility of finding negotiable ground when the discussion involves ideology. They explore the issue of violence to question the way we live together. The exhibition also features videos that focus on negotiations between the artist and his subject, works that investigate human behaviour in connection with the notions of memory and identity (cultural, religious, national). The videos offer a more intimate experience, inviting the viewer into a reflection on the individual and human vulnerability.
