Figurer le gris is composed of four canvases that make up Angèle Verret’s initial exploratory foray which continues to this day. Since the early 2000s, Verret has shown an interest in painting in and of itself, producing numerous non-representational works. Verret superimposes layer upon layer of lightly coloured pigment so as to accentuate the texture and roughness of the surface material. The artist works in the here and now, with attention to the application of paint and to gesture that leaves room for the pictorial to assert its own significance. Her praxis involves painting the unseen to allow traces of forgotten gestures to seep through, simultaneously pointing to vestiges of the past and the present. This work is exemplary of the artist’s fundamental concerns, namely her interest in the phenomena of images that appear… to disappear.
