Butthole 2 and I and I show us two bodies imbued with tension where the uncanny nature of the subjects’ postures invites ambiguity. Both works display a male body engaged in semantically uncertain gestures that evoke the theme of intimacy. Butthole 2 is a depiction of man leaning over a chair in an arresting and explicit pose, while I and I gives us an expressively charged self-portrait of the artist showing the facial and corporeal tension of a figure lying on a cushion. Schofield shows us a body frozen in exertion, suggesting either a petrified body or an individual in the midst of waking up – while the title harkens back to the Rastafarian creole “I” that is both the pronoun and the soul.
